AI in SDLC and the Knowledge Base

The integration of AI into the software development lifecycle (SDLC) is in the wild west, with traditional automation tools (CI/CD) giving way to autonomous AI agents (like Devin, Claude Code, or Cerebrum) that can code and fix bugs on their own. There is no single industry standard for limiting and controlling them yet, but there is a strong trend towards using architectural declarations (ADRs) as hard guides for AI.

The advent of AI assistants (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) and autonomous software agents has dramatically changed the speed of code writing. But this incredible productivity carries a hidden threat. "Legasi code generator on steroids".

An AI agent writes code in seconds, but if it doesn’t know the implicit conventions of the team and the history of architectural decisions, it will begin to generate technical debt at cosmic speed: break abstractions, duplicate existing services, use insecure libraries, and violate API contracts.

ADR (Architecture Decision Records) Revival in the Age of AI

As practice shows, classic, voluminous architectural documents glowing on corporate portals are useless for AI assistants. ADR (Architectural Decision Records).

As researcher Rick Pollick notes in his work. The ADR Comeback (2026)ADRs are transforming from a dull duty of architects into a key tool for managing AI agents.

When ADRs are stored in a project repository (e.g., in a directory) `docs/adr/`In a structured form (Markdown/Asciidoc), they play two important roles:

  1. Context anchor for code generation: Before starting the task, the AI developer scans the directory `docs/adr/`This instantly transforms him from a blind code generator into an "informed designer" who knows why the team chose PostgreSQL over MongoDB for the task, and what security patterns are required to use.

  2. Automatic audit of architectural compliance: At the Merge Request stage, automated AI reviewers (e.g., based on GitHub Copilot Code Review or local agents) match the changes made to the ADR base. If the developer (or other AI) violated the agreement (for example, used raw SQL queries bypassing ORM, which is prohibited by conditional ADR-0004), the AI remaster automatically blocks the merger, points to a specific broken ADR, and suggests a ready-made fix.

Docs-as-Code Practice as a Bridge Between AI and Engineers

For AI assistants to work effectively, the documentation must live by the rules of the code. Docs-as-Code (Documentation as a Code) It is no longer optional:

  • Single repository: API specifications (OpenAPI, Protobuf), architectural decision registries (ADRs), and technical manuals are stored in the same Git branch as the program code itself.

  • Atomic Commites: Any change in the business logic or API is committed simultaneously with the update of the relevant documentation. If the developer changes the signature of the method, he must update the OpenAPI file in the same commit.

  • Prevention of drift: If the documentation is updated in sync with the codebase, the AI agent’s knowledge base is always accurate and up-to-date, eliminating the root cause of the “knowledge drift.”

Continuous Documentation of Decisions (Continuous ADR)

Since engineers don’t like to waste time writing documentation, tools for automating ADRs are emerging in conjunction with Git processes (e.g., a framework). cADR from Yotpo).

Specialized agents analyze changes in commits and Pull Request, determine the architectural significance of changes (for example, adding a new table to the database, changing the authorization protocol), and automatically generate a draft ADR in the format of MADR (Markdown Architecture Decision Records).

Evolving Architectural Frameworks for AI in SDLC

Specialized tools for seamless integration of knowledge bases into AI development are actively developing:

  • adr-kit: A toolkit for Claude Code, Cursor and Copilot that teaches agents how to write, verify and verify code for internal ADRs.

  • ai-adr-review-demo: A practical demonstration stand by Shing Liu showing how to configure an automatic AI code remaster to control architectural compliance in CI/CD.

  • adr-governance: Spec-Driven Development, where architectural declarations (ADLs) are the only source of truth that strictly governs the generation of code by AI agents.
